This paper deals with Greek pottery and clay statuettes found in the votive Deposit in the sanctuary of Demetra in Catania. Four control groups (Attic, Chiot, Corinthian and Siceliote) were formed, in order to classify some items of uncertain attribution,; each control group consisted of sherds unearthed from the Deposit. These sherds were analysed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Seven main elements (Na, Fe, Ca, K, Al, Mg and Si) and four crystallographic phases (quartz, plagioclase, ghelenite and diopside) were searched for in the samples. The data were treated by means of principal components analysis (PCA) and hierarchical agglomerative clustering (CA). This procedure made it possible to identify the provenance of one of the samples of uncertain classification and to exclude the other two from the control groups used here.
