In just a few decades, South Europe has become one of the most important destination areas of immigrants coming from high emigration countries. However, from a labour market perspective, many researches have demonstrated the specificity of immigrants integration by comparing with the experience of older Centre-North European receiving countries. Considering the relationship with native labour forces and the so-called ethnic penalty, for example, these studies show a significant trade-off between immigrant access to the labour market and the quality of their jobs. Italy may be an important case study on this issue. Indeed, within the same institutional context the performances, structure and informal regulation of the labour market differ deeply at a territorial level, with many regions of the North closer to the Centre-North European countries, and those of South emphasizing the Mediterranean characteristics. The results of the multivariate analysis carried out in this study confirm the existence of a trade-off among the Italian regions in terms of ethnic penalty, providing important insights for the further definition of the Southern European model of immigrant labour market integration. However, gender specificities emerge too, making some clarifications necessary.
