The Italian Study Group Ambulatory Antibiotic Resitance (ISGAAR), consisting of three geographically distributed microbiological laboratories, consecutively collected Gram-positive and Haemophilus influenzae bacterial strains isolated from bilogical speciemens in out-patients over one year. A total of 3052 isolates were collected:1372 (45.2%) Gram-positive and 1680 (54.8%) Gram-negative. The Gram-positive strains were tested for suaceptibility towards six antibiotics (ampicillin, amoxicillin, cefaclor, cephalexin, erythromycin and pipemidic acid) by the Kirby Bauer assay and for beta-lactamase production by the nitrocefin method. The production of beta-lactamases was 8.8% for the gram-positive strains, while the incidence of production of beta-lactamases by H.influenzae was 12.9%.
