A vast historiography and countless investigations have addressed the study of the ancient city during the pre-Christian period as wellas after the spread of Christianity. The articles that make up this volume help to trace a history of thinking about the city in some of its distinctive features. This collection of essays, organized according to a chronological and axiological order, opens with a survey of the New Testament texts and closes with a reflection on Augustine’s thought.All the articles, each for their own part, deal with most of the majorissues that continue to be crucial for historians and that still reserveattention from different perspectives.
