He wished to dedicate this meeting to Cesar Gómez-Campo who passed away this year and who was a very active collaborator of the Brassica Working Group (WG), as well as a friend to many members of the Vegetables Network. He reminded participants that the objective of this meeting is to try to make “A European Genebank Integrated System” (AEGIS) work, by making sure that all the members understand what it is, how it should operate and also understand its technical and scientific concepts, as well as the responsibilities of each member within their country and as a member of the Network. He stressed the informality of the meeting. Well-informed WG members will help the good operation of AEGIS within their own countries. AEGIS will be able to function only if it is able to work at all levels, with good connections between networks, national systems and the ECPGR Secretariat. WGs will also have an opportunity to meet in separate sessions and update and review their plans for Phase VIII of ECPGR and be better equipped to carry out their workplans for the next years. He also announced that as of the end of this meeting he would resign as the Coordinator of the Network.
