From 1990 to 1992, 72 patients affected by gastric cancer have been observed in the I Departement of Surgery of University of Catania. Sixty-five underwent surgical procedure which in 42 cases was considered radical (22 total gastrectomy and 10 subtotal gastrectomy). SG was performed for tumors localized in the antrum and in 3 angular tumors of small size. All the tumors localized in the superior third of the stomach were treated by TG that was performed also in two patients with low third situated tumors showing athrophic gastritis and in one patient with macroscopic neoplastic involvement of R2 nodes. The authors, on the base of more recent literature, discuss on the role of TG in the treatment of the low situated cancer of the stomach.
