Dalla Paris de Barberie alla decolonizzazione. Flussi migratori, misure legislative e politica in Tunisia

The article analyses the migration policies adopted by the French protectorate (1881-1956) in Tunisia. The issue can be understood at the light of the political competition between Italy and France over the Sicilian Strait and the Tunisian struggle for independence. Restrictive laws replaced progressively the privileges granted by capitulations, notably during the economic crises of the late 1920s. In the 1950s nationalist uprisings led the French and Italian authorities to foster cooperation. Documents from the Italian archives of the Minister of Foreign Affairs shed light on unexplored aspects of colonial and migration history.
