The aim of this work was to study 'in vitro' the effects of anticonvulsants Gabapentin (GBP), Carbamazepine (CBZ), Lamotrigine (LTG) and Oxcarbazepine (OXC) on glutamine synthase activity (GS) in primary cultures of rat astocytes. We performed tests to investigate the effects of these drugs at different doses. GBP, CBZ, LTG and OXC at doses from 1 to 100 μg/ml, induce a decrease in GS activity on astrocytes. When the same drugs were added to astrocytes treated with lipopolisaccarides (LPS), the GS activity is remarkably decreased. These preliminary results may be relevant in elucidating the mechanisms of action, toxicity and/or protective effects of these anticonvulsants.
