The immunoexpression profile of matrixmetalloproteinase-13 was investigated for thefirst time in dentin of human caries andhealthy teeth. Twelve permanent premolars(10 caries and 2 sound) were decalcified inethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and proces -sed for embedding in paraffin wax. Sections 3-4 μm in thickness were cut and processed forimmunohistochemistry. A mouse monoclonalanti-metalloproteinase-13 antibody was usedfor localisation using an immunoperoxidasetechnique. Dentinal immunoreactivity wasdetected in all teeth; it was weak in soundteeth and strong close to the caries area. Thesein vivo findings suggest a role for metalloproteinase-13 in the development and progressionof adult human dental tissue disorders.
