This paper provides a list of Verga’s English translators and their works together with discussion principally of D.H. Lawrence’s 1925 translation of the novel Mastro-don Gesualdo (1889) and some consideration of the author’s own 1995 translation of Una peccatrice (1873). Emphasis throughout is placed on the particular nature of literary translation, an activity often and inevitably influenced by factors that go beyond purely linguistic concerns.

Abstract

This paper provides a list of Verga’s English translators and their works together with discussion principally of D.H. Lawrence’s 1925 translation of the novel Mastro-don Gesualdo (1889) and some consideration of the author’s own 1995 translation of Una peccatrice (1873). Emphasis throughout is placed on the particular nature of literary translation, an activity often and inevitably influenced by factors that go beyond purely linguistic concerns.
