ABSTRACT - Until 1933, we had only a poor knowledge of Aeschylean satyr play, thanks to quotations in other authors. The publication of significant papyrus fragments in the years 1933-1952 by Girolamo Vitelli and Medea Norsa, and then by Edgar Lobel, gave to the scholars the opportunity of reading texts of appreciable length, mainly from Diktyoulkoi, Theoroi and Prometheus. These texts allow us to evaluate directly Aeschylus' style and dramatic technique in the satyric genre, to make new and more reliable attempts to reconstruct the plot of the pieces (at least in its main lines), and to confirm or reject previous hypotheses. A brief survey of the Diktyoulkoi shows how many problems and questions are still pending, for example about number and identification of the speaking characters. Moreover, occasional coincidence of papyrus texts with quotations in ancient writers provides a useful checking tool, especially where the original words have been altered in indirect tradition.
