The results of a trial carried out in a Sicilian environments during the years 1999-2000, on the tropical grain legumes: Sesbania sesban (L.) Merril and Cajanus cajan (L.) are presenting. The aim of the trial was to characterise the biological, phenological and agronomic behaviours of both species, in particular the optimum of germination temperature, growth rate, phenology and productivity. Regarding germination, Sesbania did not show significant differences in relation to the range of studied temperatures whereas Cajanus did not germinate at 20°, showed a maximum at 30°C and decreased at 40°C. Considering the growth rate the result shown that the temperature has been a limiting factor for Sesbania, whereas the Cajanus is tolerant to the low temperatures as demonstrated by its producing seed capacity.
