A correlation between the Modified Mercalli seismic scale (1956) and the Medvedev- Sponheuer-Karnik scale (1964) has been carried out in this study. For this purpose 38 earthquakes of Sicily and Calabria, ranging through the period 1783-1973, have been taken into account. The least squares linear regression analysis shows that the most significant differences between the two scales are in the range of intensities 5 to 8-9 of the M.M. scale. It is shown that the M.S.K. scale is more suitable than the M.M. scale in macroseismic studies. The relationship found between the ratings of the two intensity scales enables the trasformation of levels of intensity represented in M.M. scale into M.S.K. scale, making possible the recalculation of all historical macroseismic data. Moreover, in order to obtain a more complete correlation between the two scales, and for a uniform classification of all earthquakes using the M.S.K. scale, a M - Io relation has been found, enabling the value of the magnitude from macroseismic data for all earthquakes without instrumental recording to be deduced.

Abstract
