The features of Etnean seismicity are described on a statistical basis, as well as the correlation between historical seismicity and lateral and subterminal eruptions. Etncan volcanism, lateral eruptions in particuiar appear connected with tectonic earthquakes of the surrounding area and shows the closest relations mainly with earthquakes of the neighbouring zones. Terminal eruptions seem to occur independently from seismic activity, whereas they precede in a statistically significant way a certain number of flank eruptions. From these results, a simple mechanism ruling thc activity of the volcano can be suggested.

Abstract

The features of Etnean seismicity are described on a statistical basis, as well as the correlation between historical seismicity and lateral and subterminal eruptions. Etncan volcanism, lateral eruptions in particuiar appear connected with tectonic earthquakes of the surrounding area and shows the closest relations mainly with earthquakes of the neighbouring zones. Terminal eruptions seem to occur independently from seismic activity, whereas they precede in a statistically significant way a certain number of flank eruptions. From these results, a simple mechanism ruling thc activity of the volcano can be suggested.
