The use of house arrest, that originally was an exceptional measure and then became part of the public security law in 1865, was a tool to control dangerous people in the first post-unification decades. In this essay, the author, through the use of archival sources, laws and debates in Parliament, looks over the application of house arrest, especially in Sicily, and the conflicts that arose in this regard between the political authorities and judiciary.
