「坪内逍遥の滑稽観‐『ドン・キホーテ』と『東海道中膝栗毛』との比較を通して」戯作の勧善懲悪に対する批評として知られている逍遥の『小説神髄』において、文学における滑稽についての言及もみられる。そのなかで逍遥は、十返舎一九流の滑稽本を猥褻で低俗なものと見なしており、滑稽本の猥褻さへの批判は彼の小説論の一つの側面ともなっている。1888年に『小説逍遥』の延長として、『専門学会雑誌』第二号に「「ウイツト」と「ヒューモア」との区別」を載せ、逍遥は『ドン・キホーテ』と『東海道中膝栗毛』との比較を試みた。これは日本近代文学における初の滑稽論であるのみでなく、セルバンテスと一九との初の比較論として大変重要な試みだと言える。しかしこの小論は「未完」でおわり、逍遥研究においてはそれほど注目されていない。本稿では『小説神髄』と「「ウイツト」と「ヒューモア」との区別」との関係を中心に、明治前期における『ドン・キホーテ』の受容とその理解ならびに、逍遥の滑稽観への考察を試みる。
Humor in literature and the comparison of Don Quijote and Hizakurige according to Tsubouchi Shōyō Shōsetsu Shinzui (1886) was a pioneering effort to set the standards of the modern Japanese novel as a form of art. It also includes critical comments about the ludicrous tradition of kokkeibon, rejected as obscene and trivial. Witto to Hyūmoa to no kubetsu, written two years later, was as an attempt of deepening Shōyō’s ideas on humor. Though it was the first specific theory of humor and the first comparative approach to Don Quijote and Hizakurige in modern Japanese literary criticism, it did not receive much attention in most of the studies on Shōyō. The aim of this paper is to provide some evidence concerning the connection of its ideas on humour with Western literary and moral theories and to point out how these ideas worked in his comparison of Cervantes and Ikku’s most popular works.
