twenty-five years, the fate of Western Sahara has been handled by the United Nations. However, diplomatic efforts have proven to be unsuccessful. Abstract

twenty-five years, the fate of Western Sahara has been handled by the United Nations. However, diplomatic efforts have proven to be unsuccessful. Indeed, since 1974, when the international organization accepted theclaims of Morocco and Mauritania on the Saharawi territory, it has hindered the referendum process undertaken by Spain on the road to the decolonization of its colony. Despite the negative opinion of the International Court, the decision taken by the General Assembly of the United Nations gave thetwo North African countries a pretext to occupy the former Spanish colony. The withdrawal of Mauritania from the conflict encouraged the Organization of African Unity to seek a solution to the controversy which opposed the Polisario Front and Morocco, hindering the effective implementation of the Arab Maghreb Union founded in 1989.Since 1990 the United Nations have tried to implement the Settlement Proposal aimed at the organization of the referendum on self-determination for the indigenous population. Yet, members of the United NationsSecurity Council, due to their geopolitical interests in favour of Morocco, have derailed the very same process that the UN had set in place.Taken together, the course of events, different phases of a complicated diplomacy, as well as the action of several special envoys of UN General Secretary, so far have failed to achieve a satisfactory solution.Even the North African uprisings and the critical situation of the Sahel have not resulted in the resumption of the peace process in Western Sahara.
