Forme e storia del "genere" novella

The seventh centenary of Boccaccio’ birth offers an opportunity to provide an essential description of some of the issues related to the short story, which in The Decameron has one of its most illustrious models, fundamental to the European tradition: there is difficulty however in identifying a definition of general value for such a widespread "genre" with its varying forms, from antiquity to the present day; the genesis of the medieval “novella”; its relations, diversified throughout history, with other genres (novel, drama, fairy tale); characteristics of the modern novella, related theoretical reflection, changes in the form of the twentieth-century short story.

Il settimo centenario della nascita di Boccaccio offre l’occasione per fornire un essenziale quadro di alcune delle problematiche connesse alla novella, che nel Decameron ha uno dei suoi modelli più illustri, fondante per la tradizione europea: le difficoltà nell’individuare una definizione di valore generale per un “genere” comunque diffusissimo, nelle sue mutevoli forme, dall’antichità ai giorni nostri; la genesi della novella medievale; i suoi rapporti, diversificati nel corso della storia, con gli altri generi (romanzo, dramma, fiaba); le caratteristiche della novella moderna, della relativa riflessione teorica, i mutamenti nella forma del racconto del Novecento.
