This symposium will focus on mechanisms underlying hippocampal plasticity, learning and memory under physiological conditions and in experimental models of disease. We will discuss different aspects of hippocampal plasticity, from the early stages of development (Cherubini) to the age-related synaptic dysfunction leading to memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Arancio). The impact of epigene8c mechanisms on hippocampal plasticity will be analyzed focusing on modula8on of plasticity-related gene expression in response to physiological and altered signaling in the brain (Grassi). The role of physiological low Aβ concentratuons (Puzzo) and BDNF/TrkB signaling (Cherubini-Grassi) in hippocampal plasticity will be elucidated along with the emerging role of microglia as sensor of environmental stimuli affecting neuroplasticity (Limatola).
