In Italy and in the other European countries, many cities are rich in ancient production sites and most of them are located in the historic centers. After having lost the original function for which these places were built, they have been transformed into degraded areas, by the disuses. Nowadays the rehabilitation of these areas has become more important, as opposed to the widespread practice of demolishing and rebuilding, with the awareness that these buildings and the machines inside them are able to talk about history like archive documents. The city of Catania presents many of these testimonies, what remains of the economic growth of which the territory was protagonist between the nineteenth and twentieth century. Exemplary case is the former headquarters of the Federation of Agricultural Consortiums, born from the transformation of the existing Cotonificio. After decades of neglect, this building could rise to a new life through a project of transformation and reuse, which is based on the construction of a hotel with tourists’ services and could be considered an expedient for experimenting with innovative technological solutions, giving to the old building a new dignity.
