Abstract

From a theological perspective, the adoption of the principle of accommodatio, or accommodation, starting with Ignatius of Loyola’s (c.1491–1556) Spiritual Exercises, corresponded to the increased use of probabilism in casuistic literature: the progressive growth of cases of conscience led moral theologians to identify probabilism as an ideal way to cope with these changes, both in theory (via moral theologians) and in practice (via confessors).
