In this study the paradoxical response to amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanate was shown by a strain of E. faecalis. This strain was compared to the ATCC 9790 strain and to an E. faecium strain not having paradoxical response towards amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanate. The authors also correlated the production of autolytic enzymes and the paradoxical response. The strains were tested for susceptibility to different antimicrobial agents in order to activate the autolytic system, and different findings were obtained. It was shown that: the E. faecium strain has an intrinsic autolytic system, the ATCC 9790 strain lyses slowly and the E. faecalis strain is effectively activated by antibiotics.
