The work reconstructs some early reflections by Wilhelm Dilthey on comparative anthropology and on the work of some eminent scholars who have worked in this field, in particular Adolf Bastian and Theodor Waitz. What emerges, if we especially look at the second half of the Nineteenth century, is the European man’s gradual discovery of distant cultures, traditions and peoples, which were once often ignored, or at most conceived with a feeling of otherness and suspicion.
