Mulieres (…) plagas (…) plus crudeliter quam viri exercuerunt. La violenza femminile nella società altomedievale

The study focuses on the theme of female violence in the High Middle Ages, for a long time almost ignored by historians, in order to show how medieval women were not only victims, but also responsible for violent acts. The analysis of narrative and legislative sources attests female violence as a regular feature of medieval society, although women due to their mollitia were not employed in the army, and acts of female violence were convicted and harshly punished. The convictions stemmed not only from the objective to curb the violent behavior of women, but from the belief that it could undermine the social order based on specific tasks assigned to each of the sexes. The evidence, chosen from the many available, actually shows that women, whenever it was necessary or in the face of aggression against themselves or their family, did not hesitate to use extreme measures, like their male gender antagonists, thus showing the other "face" of themselves.

Lo studio si concentra sul tema della violenza femminile nell'alto medioevo, per lungo tempo quasi ignorato dagli storici, al fine di dimostrare come le donne medievali non fossero solo vittime, ma anche responsabili di atti violenti. L'analisi delle fonti narrative e legislative attesta la violenza femminile come caratteristica regolare della società medievale, nonostante le donne a causa della loro mollitia non fossero impiegate nell'esercito, e gli atti di violenza femminile sono stati condannati e severamente puniti. Le disposizioni di legge derivavano non solo dall'obiettivo di frenare il comportamento violento delle donne, ma dalla convinzione che potesse minare l'ordine sociale basato su compiti specifici assegnati a ciascuno dei sessi. Le fonti, scelte tra le tante disponibili, mostrano in realtà che le donne, ogni volta che era necessario o di fronte alle aggressione contro se stesse o contro la loro famiglia, non hanno esitato a usare misure estreme, come i loro antagonisti di genere maschile, mostrando così l'altra faccia "di se stesse.
