Development of renewable energy sources is desirable in order to contrast the current economically and environmentally unsustainable global supply, mainly based on fossil sources. Biogas production deriving from anaerobic digestion processes could increase by involving a wider range of biomasses, greatly available in Mediterranean area. This study focuses on characteristics of legume feed Italian sainfoin (Hedysarum coronarium L.), for investigating its potentialities in producing bio-energy without competing with food crop. A high level of biogas and methan production has been assessed, and incomes seem to profitably exceed bio-energy production costs.

Abstract
Development of renewable energy sources is desirable in order to contrast the current economically and environmentally unsustainable global supply, mainly based on fossil sources. Biogas production deriving from anaerobic digestion processes could increase by involving a wider range of biomasses, greatly available in Mediterranean area. This study focuses on characteristics of legume feed Italian sainfoin (Hedysarum coronarium L.), for investigating its potentialities in producing bio-energy without competing with food crop. A high level of biogas and methan production has been assessed, and incomes seem to profitably exceed bio-energy production costs.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
