In antiquity, to facilitate maritime navigation were conceived ambitious programs, wich belong to two main categories. On a local scale, the Greek cities tried to fortify the settlement by isolating themselves from the promontories in which they were established, or they dug channels to put their ports in communication, when these were on the opposite sides of an isthmus. To a second type belong the projects that great autocratic powers conceived on a Mediterranean scale to avoid the circumnavigation of the headlands: this category includes the programs of Serse, Alexander the Great, other monarchs and Roman emperors. Among the various projects, some were only imagined; others were tempted but failed; some of them, however, were actually realized.

Nell’antichità si concepirono programmi grandiosi per facilitare la navigazione marittima. Essi si possono ricondurre a due categorie principali: su scala locale, in cui le città greche cercavano di fortificarsi isolandosi dai promontori in cui erano insediate, oppure scavavano canali per mettere in comunicazione i loro porti quando questi erano ai lati di un istmo. Al secondo tipo appartengono i progetti che grandi poteri autocratici concepirono su scala mediterranea per il miglioramento delle rotte: a questa categorie appartengono i progetti di Serse, Alessandro Magno e altri monarchi ellenistici e imperatori romani. Fra i vari disegni, alcuni furono solo immaginati; altri furono tentati ma non riuscirono; altri ancora invece vennero effettivamente realizzati.
