The paper proposes an exploratory fieldwork about the education practices alternative to public schools in Italy. This educative option in Italy, starting from the radical choice known as homeschooling, is allowed by the Italian Constitution insisting in the direct participation and responsibility of parents and, under this light the Italian Constitution guarantees this choice as a right. The research sets two levels of issues: 1) an up-to-date description of the symbolic elements that surround parental values on the basis of homeschooling and other alternative education practices; 2) an original interpretation of the theoretical conceptualization of the homeschooling phenomenology in order to shad a light on mother’s role in the choice and performance of homeschooling. In order to put in practice these two aspects, the research design was oriented by a qualitative method approach implementing two research tools: participant observation sessions and biographical interviews. This work put under light the last section of the whole research reporting, from an operative point of view, carried out with Sicilian mothers that homeschool their children.
