Il «suono gentile» di Ausmerzen. Marco Paolini tra spettacolo e racconto

The title of the performance that has represented two years of work for Marco Paolini, of meetings with witnesses and specialists, Ausmerzen (from March), has a sweet sound, but its subtitle has a bitter taste: Lives unworthy of being lived, lives to be cancelled, to be eliminated, to be suppressed. The questioning of the eugenics experiments that the Nazis conducted against the mentally ill and handicapped between 1934 and 1945, the relationship between science and ethics and the reflection on the politics of power are the basis of this powerful story. To make Paolini's operation even more interesting, television sublimates the actor's performance, giving a "mature" audience the responsibility of attentive and motivated listening. After the live broadcast, the journey of Ausmerzen found its way to a book (2012) that reworks and interweaves in a "literary" way a large amount of data. The final step is the DVD edition (2012) that, in addition to containing the television show, collects a workbook with 11 essays by different authors who describe, from a psychiatric and historical point of view, the condition of the mentally ill during Nazism. The contribution delivers the sense of this complex operation, but not a new one for Paolini, whose final objective is common to all his products: the hope that a show (or a book) can serve to change things, or even just help break the "creeping silence" that covers all the nefariousness.

Ha un suono dolce il titolo dello spettacolo che per Marco Paolini ha rappresentato due anni di lavoro, di incontri con testimoni e con specialisti, Ausmerzen (viene da marzo); ma il sottotitolo ha un che di amaro: Vite indegne di essere vissute, vite da cancellare, da eliminare, da sopprimere, appunto. L’interrogazione sugli esperimenti di eugenetica che i nazisti condussero ai danni dei malati psichici e portatori di handicap fra il 1934 e il 1945, il rapporto tra scienza ed etica e la riflessione sulle politiche del potere sono alla base di questa potente storia. A rendere ancor più interessante l’operazione di Paolini interviene la televisione che sublima la performance dell’attore consegnando a un pubblico ‘maturo’ la responsabilità di un ascolto attento e motivato. Dopo la diretta televisiva il viaggio di Ausmerzen trova approdo in un libro (2012) che rielabora e intreccia in modo ‘letterario’ una quantità ingente di dati. Tassello conclusivo è l’edizione dvd (2012) che, oltre a contenere lo spettacolo televisivo, raccoglie un taccuino di lavoro con 11 saggi di autori diversi che descrivono, dal punto di vista psichiatrico e storico, la condizione dei malati di mente durante il nazismo. Il contributo consegna il senso di questa operazione complessa, ma non nuova a Paolini, il cui obiettivo finale accomuna tutti i suoi prodotti: la speranza che uno spettacolo (o un libro) possa servire a cambiare le cose, o anche solo a contribuire a infrangere lo “strisciante silenzio” che copre le nefandezze tutte.
