Ripensare vernacolare: per un'architettura tra paesaggio e tettonica

Vernacular is something that belongs to the place. Modernity has shown that architecture could not be vernacular: yielding to the seduction of technological progress, architecture freed itself of the need to dialogue with its context and of the limits of traditional construction, reducing the burdens in terms of labor and economic resources but, on the other hand, leading to standardization, loss of traditional constructive knowledge, lack of care of relationship spaces, indifference to environmental conditions. Restoring attention to vernacular architecture brings out the relevance of its founding principles: the wisdom that guides them can be the subject of renewed interest, because it is able to respond to the new ecological-environmental and patrimonial needs of contemporary society, worried about the future of the new generations and looking for new critical relationships with the built heritage. The two case studies presented, the traditional Aeolian house and the traditional Norwegian rural construction, tackled in the first two intensive periods of the Erasmus + VVITA project (http://vvita.uauim.ro), highlight how “anchoring” to the place is possible thanks to the intense synergy between the landscape dimension of the intervention and the balanced frugality of the constructive aspects.
