In this paper we will discuss the saussurean theory of values and Castoriadis’s theory of social imagination. The tension between value and institution is the core of their theoretical devices. Within the framework of semiotic anthropology, the paper aims at exploring the issues concerning the relationship between social cognition, expressive and individual action and semiotic meaning institutions or culture from an epistemological point of view. The institution is revealed as a social imaginary creation, where the body of individual subject, with its potential of semantic meaning and stratification of signs, is the centre of creation. Central thesis of the work is that the unterstanding of the relationship between langage and langues does not passy only through the tension between the generality of language and linguistic diversity, but also the unterstanding of the collective intelligence and education in wich the individual language is involved. Language, then, is seen as a structure of social perception of the world, hinge between perceptual experience and symbolic expression.
