The Neapolitan music publishing industry suffered a drastic collapse in the 1630s, as a consequence of the financial crisis that followed the popular rebellion in 1647 (so-called ‘of Masaniello’) and the devastating plague of 1656. This mid-century crisis led to an activity halt of twenty-five years. This is the time lapse between the publication of the reprint of Jacques Arcadelt’s Il primo libro de’ madrigali a quattro voci, printed in 1654 by Giuseppe Ricci (the last Neapolitan edition before the plague) and the Primo libro de mottetti by Cataldo Amodei, published in 1679 by Novello De Bonis. Since De Bonis had never previously produced printed music, his debut as music printer in Naples represented a resumption of activities for local music publishing. Only 21 music editions published in Naples between 1679 and 1715 have survived. Nevertheless, the list is very interesting in view of the considerable importance of some titles, in particular two collections of Mottetti by Alessandro Scarlatti and Francesco Provenzale, respectively. Starting from these 21 editions, the study investigates the peculiarity of the Neapolitan production system in music publishing, bringing out new knowledges concerning the De Bonis printer family and the variety of typographic characters used by Neapolitan music publishers at the time.
