This contribution focuses on the rewritings of the history of Alexander the Great and the relationships with its traditions in contemporary Arab theatre. The main texts examined, both named al-Iskandar al-Akbar, are those written by Mus. t. afaˉ Mah. muˉd in Egypt in 1963 and by Sult. aˉn bin Muh. ammad al-Qaˉsimıˉ in the United Arab Emirates in 2007. By comparing different traditions, I have tried to understand the choice to recall historical or mythological events related to the history of Alexander and the allegorical meaning that has been attributed to his character, in a moment in the history of Egypt in which the relations between intellectuals and power are marked by contrasts and attempts at rapprochement or, in the second case, by an author directly involved in the political management of his own country, from 1972 until now.
