This paper deals with the discovery of a monumental building in the area at the South of the temples A and B on the Patela of Prinias. The excavations, carried out from 2005 till 2009, were directed by Dario Palermo and brought to the light significant evidence concerning the formation and transformation of Cretan sacred/public buildings at the beginnings of Archaic Period. This would be a short contribution based on some personal considerations concerning the peculiar un-iconic cult housed inside the building itself and in other Cretan sites as well. In particular, a comparison will be carried out with the Dreros temple.

Abstract

This paper deals with the discovery of a monumental building in the area at the South of the temples A and B on the Patela of Prinias. The excavations, carried out from 2005 till 2009, were directed by Dario Palermo and brought to the light significant evidence concerning the formation and transformation of Cretan sacred/public buildings at the beginnings of Archaic Period. This would be a short contribution based on some personal considerations concerning the peculiar un-iconic cult housed inside the building itself and in other Cretan sites as well. In particular, a comparison will be carried out with the Dreros temple.
