In a previous paper, one of the authors showed that rats pretreated with naloxone exhibited a higher incidence and severity of gastric lesions than did the animals injected with saline, only when exposed to cold and restraint; however, pretreatment with morphine significantly reduced gastric damage, therefore supporting the hypothesis of a role for endogenous opioid peptides in the reactivity of the organism to stressful stimuli. The purpose of the present study was to investigate involvement of opiate receptors on gastric acid secretion, in saline or dexamethasone-pretreated pylorus-ligated rats.
