Abstract

The issue of recovery and management of assets confiscated from racketeering has been addressed to date with a dual aim: to prove the effectiveness of the State in the fight against mafia, and to compensate the community for the damage caused by criminal activities. The Code of anti-mafia laws defines detailed provisions for management and destination of assets seized and confiscated from organized crime in Italy. These are resources, due to their economic and symbolic value. However, the costs that the State and the assignees entities must support require not only significant funding for the recovery, but also the constant search for resources for the management. In order to highlight the relationships between choices of reuse, outcomes and problems encountered during operation, the study proposes the analysis of the Medici’s Castle in Ottaviano (NA), confiscated from the camorra and granted in commodate to the Vesuvius National Park. The contribution describes a method to support the decision-making process for the selection of new uses, to identify new and more effective management models for the assets confiscated from the mafia, in relation to the legislative framework and the development dynamics in place.
