OECD (2001) and the 6th European Environmental Program (2002) have claimed an horizontal environmental policy for the general economic growth and in particular for the urban sustainable development. The design of urban parks is a strategic matter in order to achieve sustainable development and tourism attraction, adding to traditional esthetic functions also social functions such as public health, employment, social youth exchange, social cohesion and tourism attractions. The paper illustrates the theoretical approach of the city/green relationships and gives a deep analysis of two case-studies, the biennial Bundesgartenschau in Germany and the Masterplan of Expo 2015 in Milan (Italy).
