e question of the surface chemical composition of a series of nummi, having typology, mints and periods overlapping with those of the Misurata treasure, has been investigated. SEM/EDX and XPS measurements showed different silver plating techniques used in silvering the coins. A small cluster of coins was silvered by the technique of amalgam while an other cluster of coins did not show any content of mercury demonstrating so the use of different plating methods. As well as the segregation technique that was probably in some case used, a red-ox method involving the bronze coin surface with silver ammonia complexes is here proposed. e silver complexes were probably obtained by mixing chlorargyrite (a natural silver ore) powder with fermented urine that contains big quantity of ammonia due to the decomposition of urea. A series of experiments has shown the simplicity and the validity of the proposed method.
