Aramaic varieties of the second half of the 1st millennium BC and especially of the 1st millennium AD prove to be a productive field for the emergence of different kinds of linguistic labelling. Labels usually refer to chronological stages within the same linguistic group, as in the case of the not always well defined concepts of “Middle Aramaic” or “Late Aramaic”. Other labels, instead, reflect cultural – mostly religious – criteria, rather than linguistic facts (e.g., Jewish Babylonian, Mandaic, Syriac…). The present paper aims at surveying these denominations and discussing the criteria adopted to classify the various forms of “Middle Aramaic”.

Abstract
Aramaic varieties of the second half of the 1st millennium BC and especially of the 1st millennium AD prove to be a productive field for the emergence of different kinds of linguistic labelling. Labels usually refer to chronological stages within the same linguistic group, as in the case of the not always well defined concepts of “Middle Aramaic” or “Late Aramaic”. Other labels, instead, reflect cultural – mostly religious – criteria, rather than linguistic facts (e.g., Jewish Babylonian, Mandaic, Syriac…). The present paper aims at surveying these denominations and discussing the criteria adopted to classify the various forms of “Middle Aramaic”.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
