The widespread use of the standard, worldwide and vendor-independent OPC UA specifications in industrial environment introduces many benefits as they allow to keep open the market of the industrial applications. On the other hand, OPC UA adopts a very complex software infrastructure to realise the communication between industrial applications; this complexity may impact on the overall performance of their data exchanges. The aim of this paper is to deal with the performance evaluation of OPC UA. The main features which may influence performance in the client/server exchange of information, will be pointed out; then, the main results of this evaluation of the overhead introduced by these mechanisms onto the OPC UA overall performance will be presented and discussed.
