The proposed area to the foundation of the “geo-archaeological park of the Mt. Judica Group” is located in the centre-easternof the Sicily, between the extreme eastern edge of the Mts. Erei’s ridge and the western margin of the Plain of Catania. Moreover, it is placed between the river Dittaino to the north and the river Gornalunga to the south, between the two administrativeboundary of Catenanuova and Castel di Judica, belonging respectively to the provinces of Enna and Catania. The three main relieves of Mt. Turcisi, Mt. Judica and Mt. Scalpello are already included in the Regional Geosite Catalogueof Sicily (L.R. n° 25 of 11.04.2012) because of their high and peculiar geological, morphological and archaeologicalsignificance and the Province of Catania, the Union of Municipalities “Corone degli Erei” and the Municipality ofCastel di Judica drafted a Memorandum of understanding (Protocollo d’Intesa) since January 2008. The main aims of theMemorandum were the implementation of the Archaeological and Natural Park of the Mt. Judica and Mt. Turcisi and theopening of a relating museum. Moreover, the accessibility to the historical and cultural heritage and the protection of theenvironmental heritage of the area were other primary objectives. This territory is of particular interest because of its rich Triassic faunas only partially studied at the beginning of XXcentury. Furthermore, it is the only area of the eastern Sicily in which a Mesozoic calcareous and siliceous succession(Ionides), referred to the oceanic Ionian palaeodomain, emerges in a more external position, comparing to the similarimerese facies and sicanian facies where this is widely present. The site combines multidisciplinary interests: Geological,Archaeological, Natural and Cultural and was under archeological and territorial restrictions since 1998. It was themeeting point of different cultures and civilizations and this makes it of great importance. The archaeological research in course on Mt. Judica has revealed an indigenous settlement dates back to the IInd Iron Ageand a necropolis characterized by tombs of the VI and V centuries B.C. The Mt. Turcisi owes its importance to the presenceof a phrourion, a Greek fortified military fortress, built on the top of the mountain. It had a control and defensivefunction on the surrounding area. On the Mt. Scalpello there are the remains of a fortification system, presumably datedback to the Byzantine-Medieval period. In the heart of these structures there is the sanctuary called “Hermitage of MonteScalpello”, built in the XVIII century.
