The chapter explores the use of traditional cult practices and political roles in the city of Kameiros through the use of epigraphic and archaeological material. The sanctuary at the Acropolis was dedicated to the patron gods of the city, Athana and Zeus Poleius, and was connected to the conservative local political administrative system of the mastroi, a remnant of the era before the synoecism that created Hellenistic Kameiros. The agora sanctuary of Hestia was managed by the new aristocracy that emerged after the synoecism and whose power was based not in land ownership, but in naval control and foreign affairs. The architecture of these two main sanctuaries of the city reflects the powers of the old and new elite, and the maintenance of social order.
