Abstract

The Great War devastated the French countryside and destroyed its very soil, whileuncovering, in some areas, even the bedrock. Already during the war, French authoritiespromoted the idea of preserving war vestiges, battlefields and war memorials. For thispurpose, the Direction of Fine Arts established a task force, with the assignment ofreviewing the war vestiges worthy of being preserved. Drawings and photographs arecurrently kept in the “Médiathèque de l’Architecture e du Patrimoine”.After the war, the process of "reconstitution" of the French countryside has largely healedwounds inflicted on and gradually "dissolved" the war landscape. Today, only a few sitestell of those tragic events and the life in the trenches. Starting from the representations ofsuch a dystopian landscape (photographs, drawings, accounts), the paper aims toinvestigate the difficulties of preserving the fragile traces of the war-scape.
