Infilled frame structures (IFS) constitute a significant part of the existing structures and are still used as structural systems in many seismic areas of the world where masonry represents a traditional low cost material. In this paper an original macro-modelling approach for the seismic assessment of infilled frames is introduced. The complex interaction between the frame and the infill is simulated using an original approach in which the frame members are modelled by means of lumped plasticity beam-column elements while the contribution of the infill is described by a plane discrete element. The proposed computational strategy is intended to provide a numerical tool, which requires low computational resources, suitable for the design and the vulnerability assessment of IFS.
