<dc:description>In this paper we will examine, on the one hand, the urban, social and historical development of Athens, elected capital of post-unified Greece (1834), and, on the other hand, the image and the city's role in crime fiction through the analysis of the novels of the contemporary Greek author Petros Markaris.
The city of Athens is characterized by a particular urban development, since in just two centuries (XIX -XXI ) is able to transform itself from a village of 4,000 inhabitants into a city that is a perfect example of urban gigantism and ranks among the few cities in the world exceeding the threshold of three million inhabitants. Master development and town planning schemes intersect with urban literature, and in particular, with crime fiction. If plans intend to adjust urban space, crime fiction aims to interpret it. In fact, crime novels are born from the authors need to describe the big cities reality, which constitute the natural space where criminality operates, grows and develops.
Athens, a true multi- ethnic metropolis of a thousand different realities, with a cultural identity and a cityscape that oscillate between East and West, offers the ideal space for the setting of a crime novel, or rather, a social novel with a crime plot, as Petros Markaris s noir is often called, and becomes his protagonist along with the inspector Kostas Charitos. The main subject of his novels are the consequences of Athens colossal urbanism, such as city traffic, and the polluted environment of the center, but above all, the stories of every social class contained in the city areas.</dc:description>
