Fausto di Riez interprete del suo tempo. Un vescovo tardoantico dentro la crisi dell'impero

In this work the historic profile of the Bishop of Riez, Faustus, an emblematic figure of late ancient Gaul, theologian and master of mystical exaltation, is traced. In the course of the V century , the period in which the intellectual and pastoral activity of this bishop-monk took place, the gravitational orbit of Gaul gradually distances itself from the outdated Imperial system. Indeed, it shifts and slowly stabilises itself in a new political context, and new and unstable constraints. These constraints spring from the rise of various Roman - barbaric kingdoms. This volume highlights the role of the mediator, played by Faustus, between the heredity of the past and the emergent influences in this difficult process of transformation, conflict and rupture.

Nel volume si traccia il profilo storico del vescovo di Riez Fausto, teologo e maestro di ascesi, figura sotto vari aspetti emblematica della Gallia tardoantica, Nel corso del V secolo, nel quale si colloca l'attività intellettuale e pastorale di questo vescovo-monaco, l’orbita gravitazionale della Gallia si va allontanando dal grande e ormai usurato sistema imperiale, per spostarsi e stabilizzarsi lentamente dentro nuovi, e diversamente circoscritti, assetti politici, dentro nuovi e ancora fluttuanti confini: quelli disegnati dal sorgere dei vari regni romano-barbarici. Il volume evidenzia il ruolo di mediatore, interpretato da Fausto, fra eredità del passato e 'nuovo' che si affaccia, in questo laborioso processo, di trasformazioni conflitti e fratture.
