Dgnss/ins Van Project For Road Survey In The Cei Countries: The Problem of Datum Transformation

Within research co-ordinated by Prof. Giorgio Manzoni of Trieste University and turned to identify and test methods and procedures for road survey using a special ve- hicle with GPS/INS equipment, routes plotting on digital maps is considered. About this aspect, taking into account that this mobile can operate not only in Italy, but also in other countries of CEI, problem of datum transformation from WGS84 to other related to specificity of the territory is analyzed. In this paper, after a brief resume of the main characteristics of the official cartography of different countries (type of representation and reference ellipsoid), operations for Helmert and Molodensky transformations are illustrated; then applications on transformations from WGS84 to Italian UTM (ED50) and to Italian Gauss-Boaga (Roma 40) are presented in reference to a Sicilian road survey around Etna volcano.
