Abstract

The history of nomenclature of the current genus Brachygluta is briefly sketched. The distribution of the genus throughout the world is outlined. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of the morphology of the external and internal skeleton structures as well as of the aedeagus are given for selected species. Some particulars of integument structure and pilosity are reproduced by scanning electron microscope photographs and briefly commented, Available information on biology and ontogenesis is summarized. The systematic position of the genus within the Pselaphinae is specified. The external morphology and the characteristics of the aedeagus are precisely described for all 75 Palaearctic (sub)species exhibiting secondary male sexual characters on abdominal tergites, the distribution and, if available, ecology of these species are given. The species are arranged in groups, some of them introduced for the first time or newly defined. Twenty one species are described as new to science: Brachygluta alpina Besuchet n. sp., B. anguliventris Bueckle n. sp., B. antalyana Brachat n. sp., B. asphaltica Brachat n. sp., B. atlantica Besuchet n. sp., B. cecilia Bueckle n. sp., B. epirotica Sabella n. sp., B. gnosiaca Besuchet n. sp., B. jessica Brachat n. sp., B. jordanica Besuchet n. sp., B. kirgisica Bueckle n. sp., B. kurdica Besuchet n. sp., B. larica Sabella n. sp., B. martina Bueckle n. sp., B. pamphylica Brachat n. sp., B. tadshikica Sabella n. sp., B. tunisiaca Sabella n. sp., B. turkmenica Bueckle n. sp., B. ultima Besuchet n. sp., B. uzbekica Sabella n. sp. and B. westfalica Brachat n. sp. Four new synonymies are established Brachygluta abrupta Dodero= Brachygluta septemtrionalis Besuchet (syn. nov.), Brachygluta furcata (Motschulky) = Brachygluta picciolii Saulcy and Brachygluta turcica Meggiolaro (syn. nov.) and Brachygluta simplicior Raffray= Brachygluta dubia Blattny (syn. nov.). The following six subspecies are elevated at species level: Brachygluta abrupta abrupta Dodero, Brachygluta abrupta occidentalis brupta Besuchet, Brachygluta narentina narentina Reitter, Brachygluta narentina klimschi Holdhaus, Brachygluta tristis tristis Hampe and Brachygluta tristis vicaria Besuchet. Finally, two new combinations are given for Brachygluta sursicauda (Ganglbauer) and B. editha (Reitter). A key of to species and a list of species and their synonyms are provided. The distribution of most species is represented in maps. For each species, the most important characters of external morphology (abdominal tergites, antennae, metatibiae, etc.) and the aedeagus are figured.
