This book represents an investigation into one of the basic issues in the study of translation: how do we reconcile theory and practice? The first and last chapters respectively seek to show what translation theory is and what translation practice is. Indeed, chapter 1, "Theory and Hubris" provides a consideration and synthesis of the development of the interdiscipline of Translation Studies, with some consideration also given to the hermeneutical questions that inevitably arise when dealing with the interpretation of language. Chapter 5, "Praxis and Humility", draws to a large extent on my own experience of translation practice as a professional translator. The conceit that runs through the book is that the ambitions of translation theory can often be associated with hubris while the painstaking praxis of translation can often be associated with humility. It is also evident, however, that there are moments when there is hubris in praxis and humility in theory. The use of such a conceit is methodologically valid because in a sense all language, especially literary language, _is_ metaphor, and so, too, is translation--a bearing, a carrying of something from one place to another.
