The volume proposes a picture of late ancient Gaul through a reading at different levels of the plentiful documentation on canon law produced mainly in the course of these two crucial centuries the V and the VI, during which the region undergoes the influence of significant and turbulent transformations of the pars Occidentis of the Empire. Through the synod’s guidelines an attempt is made to reconstruct not only the regional history of the synods but also the history, while being examined from a particular viewpoint, of the Gallic society which is recounted through this specific kind of testimony. Some of the themes explored are selected as examples of problematic areas of processes deemed to be particularly indicative in helping to compose an accurate picture, despite being partial, of the link between religion, history and social structures as gleaned from the legal dramas interwoven in the canons.

Abstract
The volume proposes a picture of late ancient Gaul through a reading at different levels of the plentiful documentation on canon law produced mainly in the course of these two crucial centuries the V and the VI, during which the region undergoes the influence of significant and turbulent transformations of the pars Occidentis of the Empire. Through the synod’s guidelines an attempt is made to reconstruct not only the regional history of the synods but also the history, while being examined from a particular viewpoint, of the Gallic society which is recounted through this specific kind of testimony. Some of the themes explored are selected as examples of problematic areas of processes deemed to be particularly indicative in helping to compose an accurate picture, despite being partial, of the link between religion, history and social structures as gleaned from the legal dramas interwoven in the canons.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
