One of the most suitable choices for real-time Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. Previous research already proved that a bounded delay can be achieved when the cluster-tree operating mode is used. While these results are fundamental, there are a number of aspects that still have to be addressed in order to meet the requirements of real large-scale WSNs, namely, low scalability and unbalanced energy consumption. This paper shows these limitations through simulation results obtained using the Omnet++ tool and proposes viable alternatives to address these problems.

Abstract
One of the most suitable choices for real-time Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. Previous research already proved that a bounded delay can be achieved when the cluster-tree operating mode is used. While these results are fundamental, there are a number of aspects that still have to be addressed in order to meet the requirements of real large-scale WSNs, namely, low scalability and unbalanced energy consumption. This paper shows these limitations through simulation results obtained using the Omnet++ tool and proposes viable alternatives to address these problems.File in questo prodotto:
